Mrs. Chairman of the Caribbean Prayer Summit, Honored Representatives of Suriname, Barbados, Guyana, French Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Curacao, Bonaire.

On behalf of the Dutch Reconciliation Coalition, supported by the Dutch Prayer Movement, The Dutch City Prayer Movement and the Dutch Houses of Prayer, and with agreement of the Dutch Evangelical Alliance, I, a Dutch and a European prayer leader, thank you for the opportunity to address your congregation with the following apology.

Concerning colonialism: During the 16th - 19th century the sea-faring European nations, mainly Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, England, France, settled on your coasts and colonized your territories, ignoring the rightful claims of the First Nations, discriminating against them as un-civilized beings, overruling their cultural ways, establishing political entities with legalized racism, establishing churches that justified these acts, thus obscuring the One True God from being clearly seen by and expressed to all in habitants of your coasts and blocking these “states” from making their own independent covenant with God

Concerning slave trade and slavery: During the 16th - 19th century the Dutch, in particular the W.I.C. and the M.C.C., have traded Africans as slaves by the thousands. This trade is among the most shameful acts in Dutch history, in the eyes of God and in the eyes of Man. The purchase of Africans along their coasts was violent, the treatment during the journey was brutal, the respect for the human dignity was nil, the arrogance and discrimination was shameful, the whole-sale of slaves, especially out of Curacao and St. Eustatius, was degrading, the separation of families was heart-rending, the undermining of fatherhood was destructive, the soothing of our consciences was hypocritical, the abuse of women and girls was immoral, the hurt of the victims was tremendous - but ignored, the long-term effects of the trade and the slavery itself was immeasurable - but belittled. No excuse can justify any of these atrocities.

Concerning migrant workers: After the abolition of slavery, the colonial powers in your region imported thousands of Chinese, of Hindustani from India, and thousands of Javanese from the Dutch East Indies. The invitations to this region were seductive, the labor contracts were misleading, the labor was close to slavery, the integration in the new nations was hard.

Each and every one of these acts is a shameful corporate sin, degrading your nations and causing our nation to be manifold guilty.

We acknowledge these acts as sin, before God and before you, representatives of the Caribbean nations.

We realize that economically we can never even calculate the damage caused to your predecessors and to your nations.
We realize that culturally the confusion, hurt and distortion is of a continental scale.

We realize that spiritually The Netherlands and Europe are in no way able to make up for their sins against you, representatives of the Caribbean nations.

We believe that only the sacrifice of Jesus at the cross can wash away these huge corporate sins.
It is with appeal to the work of Jesus at the Cross that we ask for your forgiveness. That is, for the Netherlands and for Europe, the only hope. And we plead for your grace.

We realize that this act of identificational confession of historic corporate sins needs to be followed up by similar acts of spiritual leaders and finally of political leaders of our nations.

We realize also that through the past we have become connected negatively, and feelings of hate, bitterness and inferiority on your side, and feelings of selfjustification and shame on our side, may still affect our attitudes.

Therefore for the future we choose to remain connected, but then in a positive way.
We are committed to remain connected positively, in heart and deed, to each of the nations represented here.

Mw. de Voorzitter van de Caribbean Prayer Summit, geachte vertegenwoordigers van Suriname, Barbados, Guyana, French Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Curaçao, Bonaire.

Namens de Nederlandse Verzoenings Coalitie, ondersteund door de Gebedsbeweging en de Huizen van Gebed in ons land, en met instemming van de EO en de EA, ik, als Nederlands en Europees gebedsleider, dank u voor de gelegenheid om in uw vergadering de volgende schuldbelijdenis te mogen uitspreken.

Betreffende kolonialisme: Gedurende de 16de -20ste eeuw hebben Europese zeevarende naties, m.n. Spanje, Portugal, Nederland, Engeland en Frankrijk, --zich op uw kusten gevestigd, --uw gebieden gekoloniseerd, --de rechten van de First Nations, de Indianen, ontkend, --hen gediscri-mineerd als “onbeschaafden”, --hun culturen verpletterd, --nieuwe “staten” gecreeerd, waarin racisme was gelegaliseerd, en --kerken gesticht die dit optreden verdedigden.

Dit alles heeft het zicht op de enige ware God verduisterd voor alle bewoners van deze regio en heeft een verbond van deze staten met God geblokkeerd.

Betreffende slavenhandel en slavernij: Gedurende de 16de -19de eeuw hebben Nederlanders, m.n. door de W.I.C. en de M.C.C., tien- en honderdduizenden Afrikanen verhandeld en gebruikt als slaven. Deze daden behoren tot de meest beschamende van onze geschiedenis, vanuit menselijk standpund maar zeker vanuit Gods standpunt. -De aankoop van de Afrikanen was gewelddadig; --de behandeling gedurende de reis en op de plantages beestachtig; --het respect voor menselijke waardigheid totaal afwezig; --de arrogantie en discriminatie vreselijk; --de groothandel in slaven, m.n. via Curaçao en St. Eustatius, was mensonterend; --het ondermijnen van familieleven en van vaderschap was maatschappelijk destructief; --het sussen van onze gewetens was hypocriet; --het misbruik van meisjes en vrouwen was immoreel; --het lijden van de slachtoffers was hemeltergend,maar werd genegeerd; --het langetermijn effect van slavenhandel en slavernij is onmetelijk, maar werd en wordt gebagatelliseerd.

Geen “verklaring” kan deze gewelddaden rechtvaardigen.

Betreffende de gastarbeiders: Na de afschaffing van de slavernij hebben de koloniale mogend-heden in uw gebied duizenden gastarbeiders ge-immigreerd, Hindoestanen en Javanen. -De uitnodigingen waren verleidelijk; --de ronseling verraderlijk; --de arbeidscontracten misleidend; --de arbeid weinig beter dan slavernij; --de integratie in de nieuwe samenleving was zwaar.

Elk van deze daden is een beschamende zonde, op regeringsniveau, die uw naties immense schade heeft berokkend en onze naties veelvuldig schuldig doet staan.

Wij erkennen deze daden als zonde, voor God en voor u, vertegenwoordigers van Suriname en van het Caribische naties.

Wij beseffen dat we de schade in economische zin, aan uw voorouders en aan uw naties, nooit zullen kunnen berekenen, laat staan terugbetalen.

Wij beseffen dat de culturele verwarring, pijn en misvorming van continentale schaal zijn.
Wij beseffen dat Nederland en Europa op geen enkele wijze in staat zijn deze complexe beschadiging van uw identiteit zelfs maar in te schatten.

Wij geloven dat alleen het offer van Jezus Christus aan het kruis deze enorme corporatieve schuld kan afwassen.
Het is met appel op dat werk van Jezus Christus aan het kruis, dat wij u vragen om vergeving. Dat is voor Nederland en Europa de enige hoop. En we smeken om uw genade.

Wij beseffen dat op dit identificerend schuldbelijden van historische corporatieve schuld gelijk-soortige belijdenissen door geestelijke en politieke leiders van onze naties moet volgen.

Wij beseffen ook dat uw en onze naties door het verleden negatief aan elkaar zijn verbonden, en dat gevoelens van haat, bitterheid en minderwaardigheid aan uw kant, en gevoelens van schaamte en zelfverdediging aan onze kant, nog een rol kunnen spelen.

Daarom besluiten en kiezen wij er voor met elk van de hier vertegenwoordiged naties verbonden te blijven, maar dan positief, met hart en daad.
